Breath is Held Before the WRC Estonia Rally: Can Rovanperä Be Stopped, Can Tänak Achieve Victory on Home Soil?

## The Fastest Corner of the Season in the World Rally Championship: Rally Estonia The World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar continues with Rally Estonia, the eighth stop of the season, where drivers push their courage and cars to the limit. After the challenging and grueling stages of the Safari Rally, the championship moves to the incredibly fast and rhythmic dirt roads on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Described as a "dirt track," Estonia is set to host one of the season's most exciting battles for both drivers and spectators with its high speeds and consecutive hills and jumps. This rally not only requires speed and skill but also represents a critical turning point for many drivers. All eyes are on three main characters: local legend Ott Tänak, championship leader and reigning two-year champion Kalle Rovanperä, and the Hyundai team trying to topple them. ## Local Hero Ott Tänak and M-Sport's Tough Test When it comes to the Estonia Rally, the first name that comes to mind is undoubtedly Ott Tänak. The 2019 World Champion has won this rally in his home country four times, proving his dominance. For Tänak, this race is more than just a rally; it's a battle of honor. Having joined the M-Sport Ford team with high hopes at the start of the season but unable to achieve the results he hoped for due to stability and speed issues with the Ford Puma Rally1 car, the Estonian driver aims to find morale in front of his home crowd and change the course of the season. While his victory with the Puma in the Sweden Rally showed the car's potential, it is true that it lags behind Toyota and Hyundai, especially in fast dirt rallies. The aerodynamic structure and suspension geometry of the Puma may not work as efficiently as its competitors on Estonia's high-speed and jump-laden stages. However, the Tänak factor should never be overlooked. Knowing the roads of his home like the back of his hand and recognizing every hill and corner by heart, Tänak will try to close this disadvantage with his talent, courage, and spectator support. With the support of thousands of Estonian rally enthusiasts, the magic Tänak may create could bring M-Sport the most meaningful victory of the season. For him, even if he's far from championship contention, this race will be a source of pride and motivation. ## The Throne Holder: Flying Finn Kalle Rovanperä and Toyota's Domination On one side is the local hero, and on the other is the rally's reigning king. Despite his young age, Kalle Rovanperä, the record-breaking and reigning WRC champion, has been the absolute ruler of the Estonia Rally for the past two years. The superiority of the Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 car on these fast dirt surfaces is undeniable. When Rovanperä's smooth and aggressive driving style combines with Toyota's excellent aerodynamic and chassis balance, a nearly unbeatable combination emerges. After winning the grueling Safari Rally in Kenya, Rovanperä, who solidified his championship lead, aims to extend the gap even further on one of his favorite terrains. The Estonia rally, followed by the Finland rally, is viewed as the two strongest races on the calendar for Rovanperä. Consecutive victories here could leave him virtually unchallenged on the path to the championship. Although teammates Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta will fight for the podium with Toyota's backing, the main favorite is undoubtedly the reigning champion himself. Rovanperä's speed and confidence make him the man to beat this weekend. ## Hyundai's Comeback Hope and Three Different Weapons The biggest contender wanting to say "stop" to Toyota's overwhelming dominance is Hyundai Motorsport. The Korean manufacturer, which has faced consistency issues throughout the season and lagged at times in speed, arrives in Estonia with hope. The team's Belgian star, Thierry Neuville, must defeat Rovanperä to keep his championship hopes alive. Unwilling to allow the points gap to widen, Neuville will push the limits of the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 car. Another Finnish driver for the team, Esapekka Lappi, is a true fast dirt rally expert. Lappi, always a podium candidate in rallies like Sweden and Finland, has the potential to achieve a surprise victory in Estonia. However, the most intriguing subject on the Hyundai front is Teemu Suninen, who recently joined the team and will race with the Rally1 car at the top level for the first time. After joining the team following the tragic death of Craig Breen, Suninen had previously gained experience at this level with M-Sport but has been competing in WRC2 for a while. His performance with the i20 N is of critical importance for both his future and Hyundai's position in the manufacturers' championship. It is known that Hyundai focused on developing the car during the tests conducted before Estonia. If these developments bear fruit, they could challenge Toyota with three cars over the weekend. ## The Character of the Rally: Speed, Jumps, and Zero Margin for Error The most fundamental feature that sets the Estonia Rally apart from others is its incredibly high average speeds. The stages typically consist of wide, smooth, and flowing dirt roads. These roads allow drivers to almost constantly travel in top gear. However, this speed also brings a large risk. Especially the hills and jumps, known as "blind," where you can't see what lies ahead, determine the fate of the rally. It's crucial for the car to land in the right position after a jump and for the driver to be prepared for the next corner. The slightest timing error or wrong setting can mean losing control of the car in seconds. Therefore, Estonia is also known as a "sprint" rally; there is zero margin for error, and it requires 100% concentration from the first stage to the last. Drivers must completely rely on the pace notes they prepared during their reconnaissance (recce) before the race. The combination of courage and flawless notes is the key to victory in this high-speed dance. Additionally, in the WRC2 category, the fierce competition between names like Oliver Solberg, Andreas Mikkelsen, and Gus Greensmith will further increase the rally excitement. The action starting on Thursday will conclude with the Power Stage on Sunday, and the motorsports world will learn the winner of this high-octane battle.
